Deacon Paul’s Administrative Update
I gave the State of the Parish Address at the Annual Meeting on October 31, 2021 at Riverside Ballroom. I reported that our Parish financial status remains strong as our parishioners have been very generous throughout this past fiscal year (July 1, 2020-June 30 2021) and throughout the pandemic. ONLINE giving has also helped greatly. We continue to operate without any deficit due to this support. At the Annual Meeting financial summaries were handed out for this past fiscal year.
Our Parish roster has remained steady as we have lost some parishioners due to sister death and moves out of the Parish. However, we have gained at five families due to baptism and additional families that have moved into the area. Please keep inviting your neighbors and friends to our Parish and encourage them to register as Parishioners if they do not yet belong to any other Parish.
In the past fiscal year we also had three high school students confirmed by Father Finian at Pentecost. We also have had 10 funerals in the fiscal year but a majority of those funerals were either non- parishioners or parishioners who passed in the prior fiscal year (19/20) but due to COVID the memorial or funeral was not conducted until this fiscal year. This fall, 2021, we have four new high school students in our confirmation program. We also support eight grade school students in the Green Bay Area Catholic school System (GRACE).
Our biggest challenge continues to be in attracting younger families to join the Parish. This has been a challenge for the Parish since 1990. In September, the Parish Council approved the hiring of a youth coordinator who will help us “network” with the under 40 crowd. Hopefully this will increase our Youth Parish numbers. We also hosted a neighborhood block party in late August to meet and greet new families, especially those families at Friar Flats.
Another challenge for the Parish is to continue to manage and maintain the large school and convent buildings owned by the Parish. Currently we have five different renters in the school and convent buildings which help us offset the building maintenance costs. The school alone is 70,000 square feet so that is a lot of space to heat, clean and maintain each year. So far we have been able to “cash flow” these expenses with the tenant’s rent. Finance Council will continue to closely monitor this situation. For the present, we do not plan on placing the school building or convent building for sale.
Further, in July 2021, we entered into a pilot program for the Bishop’s Capital Campaign. In this Campaign the Parish will receive 50% of all funds raised. We plan on continuing the Church restoration with our 50%. Our goal is $275,000 total for the Campaign. As of this moment the Parish is nearing that goal. We expect to exceed the goal by the time the Campaign ends on December 5th, 2021. Therefore, we will be reconvening the Restoration Committee in November to look at additional work to the Church, especially the SACRED ART in the sanctuary area.
Finally, in the past two fiscal years the Parish received bequests and other grants totaling approximately $200,000. This money has been set aside in the newly formed CHURCH MAINTENCE TRUST FUND. This Trust may only be used in the future for maintaining the Church here at St. Mary of the Angels. It can be used for no other purpose. As a reminder, the Church is now on the NATIONAL HISTORIC REGISTRY which means that it may never be torn down or structurally altered. The Parish has a Ground Lease with Commonwealth properties for 200 years. This means that the Parish owns the Church Building but not the ground underneath the building. Hence the Lease. So the Parish needs to set aside funds to maintain the Church Building for at least 200 years. Therefore, ALL PARISHIONERS must write a bequest in their ESTATE PLANS for this Church Maintenance Trust fund such that at a Parishioner’s passing, money can be left to the Trust to continue to maintain the Church of St. Mary of the Angels.
It has been a blessing being your Pastoral Leader this past year. Father Finian and I continue to pray for the Parish and all Parishioner daily. Peace and all Good to all of you
